Weekly feature: In my DVD collection Turbofire


My exercise is still on track and I am getting excited for my evening yoga class so I thought I’d try something different for a change. I have stacks and stacks on fitness DVDs so I’m gonna start a weekly feature looking at more detail into every single one of them so that people get a better feel for them before spending their hard earned money lol

First up Turbofire by Chalene Johnson:

When I got it over a year ago it was not available in the UK but now beachbody is starting to become better know in the UK and they are selling some of their programmes online. I appreciate that £99 is a steep price but you do get a lot of resources to keep you on track.

Besides the workout DVDs you also get a lovely looking and very informative Fuel the Fire nutritional guide with tasty recipes ( thought for myself I found them to be erring on the side of people wanting to lose a decent chunk of weight hence I had to add more calories in for myself than prescribed in the programme). You also get The TurboFire 5-Day Inferno Plan to kick start your weight loss that claims you can lose up to 10 pounds in 5 days (but I gotta be honest with you and say I have not tried it but I do not have any reasons to think that the anticipated results would be exaggerated knowing Chalene lol).

You also get Turn Up the Burn Fitness Guide to give you more behind the scenes info of why this programme will work (being a fitness geek that made me very happy as I like to know the theory behind things) and a nice big TurboFire Class Schedule so that you know exactly what DVD you are mean to be doing each day (I think it can work as a great motivational tool not to skip any workouts if it’s displayed prominently somewhere). To help with the workouts themselves there;s  a sculpting band and a lower body band included. Beachbody even throws in a tape measure so you can see your own progress ( so it’s not just all about how much weight you lose, which I think is fab).

Looking at beachbody website they are actually offering 90 day money back guarantee which can never be a bad thing.

So now onto the workouts themselves:

*Disclaimer: I haven’t actually done all the DVDs in the prescribed order and everyone has different needs and preferences so take what I say with a pinch of salt, ok?*

What I liked:

  • Music: It’s funky, it’s upbeat, it’s contemporary and it’s infecious. It definitely made me want to put the DVDs on and it makes the time fly by
  • The moves: I have done LesMills BodyCombat before and I used to do Thai boxing on a weekly basis so martial arts types of moves are down with me a lot. I enjoy imagining I’m kicking the crap out of someone,ok? 😉 If that’s your thing you’re not going to be disappointed by Chalene. There also some other more aerobic based moves so everyone will find something for themselves (hopefully)
  • Instructors: Chalene Johnson has been in the fitness industry for over 20 years and it shows!! In the most positive way ever – It’s not her first ever programme, her cues are spot on and she has such a positive energising personality you will be giving it your all even at the last DVD drill. There are also two more ladies one diung lower impact version so you don;t have to miss out on the fun if you need to modify due to knee/back etc problems
  • Variety: some other programmes I have done you do the same workouts for a number of days (hello Jillia Michaels). There is nothing wrong with that but Turbofire keeps it fresh and maybe a tiny bit less boring by switching things up a lot more often.
  • Stretching: I like the bigger focus on stretching as often on other fitness DVDs warm up and cool down take all of 2 mins (and yeah you may be told to stretch some more but let’s be honest here who will? ). By including it within the programme once I’m done with the DVD I am done with the workout too.


What’s not so great:

  • Price: Already said it, compared to stand alone DVDs it is a big initial outlay, but you get variety for that price
  • Workouts: I do lvoe them BUT even with new to class feature (that shows you the moves slowly so you can get a hang of them) I still at times have no idea what’s going on. And this is coming from someone who has done over 10 years of figure skating and can follow routines for BodyCombat, BodyBalance or yoga fairly easily. Not that I let this put me off, if I get confused I stick with a combo I know till we move onto the next part
  • Need for room: It may sound fairly obvious but still you need a decent amount of space to be able to do the DVDs when we were away last year I found that the room itself was too small for me to be doing kicks without knocking something down.


All in all Turbofire is really good and I do fully intend to do the full 90 days following the schedule properly as soon as I’m cleared by my physiotherapist to do so. I follow Chalene on twitter for extra motivation too 🙂

OMG moment and more 30 day shred


First off I need to share some good news on here as I don’t want to post it on my facebook profile (for various reasons). I got though to an interview stage for clinical psychology doctorate. I thought that I was rejected for sure when I got back home and saw a thin envelope (normally thick envelope means an interview as it contains maps, directions etc.). But it turned out I got an ourtright interview. I can still hardly believe that 243 people sat the selection test and out of them only 45 of us got an interview. I now have till 16.05 to make sure I can convince 2 panels that I deserve one of 15 available places. I think hard core revision is a must and couple books I ordered recently will come very handy.

Now onto the exercise, I am on day 4 of 30 day shred and dare I say it is getting tiny bit easier, though I need to be careful with plyometrics as jumping jacks started to be felt a bit too much yesterday. I am still dilligently doing my exercises prescribed by my physio. I have been getting extra exercise for the past 3 days as well:

4 hrs of walking around London on Tue with Mr A

tons of cleaning, moving furniture and hoovering for the past two days in preparation for service launch tomorrow

so I am rather pleased with myself.

Baking and shopping haul


My back is happier with me as I went to a different yoga session last night and got my noodle effect that I was after..very relaxing and stretchy 60 mins of my life definitely worth £2 fee lol

More importantly I started doing 30 day shred (by Jillian Michaels) again and I have got to say I lost a lot of strenght and endurance squats with dumbbell presses (only 2kgs in each hand) really tired me out and doing 15 pushups in a row was pure torture but I survived day 1 and intend to stick with the shred. I have mostly chosen it coz:

a) I LOVE Jillian Michaels I have most of her dvds as she can not do wrong in my eyes (let’s forget when she was endorsinf those dodgy diet pills tho pretty please)

b) it fits perfectly with my physiotherapist’s recommendation of no more than 30mins of normal exercise per day

c) I enjoyed it last time round

d) I can do it both at home and at a gym which is a binus when I’m struggling tp fit a workout in.

Being me I did switch a few things up as I had no oranges I used lemon zest and I swapped raspberries for strawberries fr exactly the same reason. I served them up in typical British fashion smothered in strawberry jam and clotted cream–> not healthy at all but sooooooooo worth it 🙂

Then I also made Kasey’s PowerPumpkin Roll (PowerCakes). The only thing I did swap was the pumpkin puree as I used babyfood (apple and pumpkin flavour) coz couldn;t find any pumpkin when needed lol

Had a portion of it for my mid morning snack today and it certainly filled me up very nicely 🙂

I don’t think I ever shared my Holland and Barret amazing buy 1 get one half price haul from last weekend so gere it goes:

You may have noticed a theme there and it is Gluten free products as they don’t make me break out in hidious spots or cause major stomach upsets..I got all this lot for just £45 so I’m pretty pleased 🙂

I’m off to London on Tuesday with Mister A to see my granddad who has flown in on unrelated business so I hope I sorted this scheduled post ok

What’s your best bargain ever?

Oops I overdid it again…


So I went to a yoga class on Thursday night..all excited, all ready expecting to feel instantly zen, flexible and to stretch out all my kinks

On the pic I’m looking confident, ready to conquer my yoga mat and in the zone..BUT..

when I got to the gym  different instructor was taking a class and instead of doing the regular yoga for relaxation/flexibility she did yoga for strenght. And yes she warned us before hand so I could have left at that stage. Did I? Of course not I was determined to do a yoga class no matter what after 4 months of being told I can not risk it. Being a good competetive girl I placed my mind directly in front of the instructor’s–> clearly so I can see her better not that she can see what an amazing yogini I am *cue sarcasm*

I’m sure you can see where this is going- I did get through the 60 mins of yoga, but in hindsight I should have left probably if not before it started than maybe 15 mins in as my back was not happy camper. I found out there is no way in hell I can even do Cobra properly at this stage and was stuck with sphinx

(which I know is absolutely fine blah blah blah but being rather competetive I felt like a failure for taking the easier option). The only thing that I have done really well that caused me no pain was a tree pose:

So the next morning after yoga my muscles were not happy one bit so I had to make a decision to skip a workout out I did still my physio exercises to pacify my back and I *think* I learnt my lesson.

Onto a bit nicer topic of food here are some of my eats over the last two days:

Friday night is fast becoming a pizza and a movie night. Once I find a topping that I like I will do it till death so once again we have goats cheese, cherry tomaotes, rocket with the guest performance from red onions (hate cutting them but scored a bag of them already precut that was reduced to 25p so seemed like too much of a bargain to pass haha). This time we tried Caitlin’s recipe for pizza dough and it was better than last weeks from Oh She Glows but it’s still missing something as it’s rather tricky to transfer onto a pizza stone (so it’s just a bit too runny without actually being runny IYSWIM?)

Next morning , just because I could I had this:

Team effort cooking (as in I said I wanted a stew with these ingredients and I switched the slow cooker on in the morning whereas Mr A chopped and prepped everything lol) Pork stew with lentils, carrots, swede and an apple for flavour. Had this for Sat lunch and I still got 3 more portions in the freezer:

Do you ever get fixated on any food combos?

First time back in the gym in over 2 months


So I have  done it  I unfrozen my membership at Pure gym yesterday  morning , packed my gym bag and carefully  chosen my outfit to face a new kind  of challenge. I`ve got to say I sorta  dreaded my return  to the fitness  fold , mostly  coz I lost a lot of my strength  and endurance (I know it’s  perfectly  normal and to be expected but it didn’t  stop me hating  it any less) in the process  of sorting my muscle imbalances / back problem. At the gym end  of a day not moving  much for over months two months  is going  to have  an impact on my fitness  levels.

I am still only allowed to do max 30mins of exercise apart from my 30 mins of physio exercises a day so I told myself to be good and stick to 30 min maximum. I ended up doing a quick warm up, followed by 15 mins of cardio on elleptical (levels 3 and 4 at incline 10) and a mix of TRX exercises (mountain climbers, reverse row, pushups), knee ups on Smith machine and some stability ball rollouts. Stretched for a couple of minutes and called it a day.

I can sya I survived and felt better for it. No one stared at me, laughed at me for needing to take more frequent breaks so I’m hoping my fear of returning to gym is gone now. I’m booked in for  a yoga session tonight as well ( it is 60mins but I figured it’s slow yoga so not that much of an exercisey activity so should be ok with that, right?)

been a crazy busy day but work has been fab lately so it flew by.

I have been dying to get a more up to date phone so that I could take pictures on the go and be able to keep up with all the blogs, twitter etc when out and about. It is a completely brand new wrold for me as believe it or not up until today I have never accessed internet on my phone or downloaded anything onto it.


I spent most of the evening trying to figure out the phone and looking for some cool free apps as well as organising my gym bag as I’m going to the gym tomorrow evening for the first time in over 2 months!!!


I am in equal parts excited and scared that I will not look ”cool” having lost pretty much all of my strenght and endurance
