So your partner has kids/you’re a stepmom….

So your partner has kids/you’re a stepmom

Sorry for change of plans- I was going to post another DVD review but will now do it on Tuesday.

Instead, a more personal topic:

What do you do/how do you cope with your partner’s kid/kids?

I’ve gottta say it has been a steep learning curve with me and Mr A. He has got 3 little monsters:

2 girls A (who is 6), C (who is 7) and a boy E (who is almost 10).

Depending on his work pattern we either get them Saturday midday till Sunday evening or if he’s working on Sat his parents will pick them up and drop them off at ours round 6ish. On the odd occasion that Mr A is working for the whole weekend his parents keep them kids and he goes over straight after work till 11pm to spend the evening with them.

For the most part that works for me, but there are some weekends when I wish we would get to do the stuff that I want to do. I don’t think that it helps that I don’t have kids of my own and no intention of having any either. Lately, a lot of my favourite bloggers are either pregnant or have babies and at times (I may get flamed for it) I find it hard to relate to their posts. I do still read them trying to find tips on how to handle three kids all wanting to do different stuff, all making noise and messing up my little house. I know it is completely normal, but if I am to be honest it doesn’t make it any better.

I have been having short meldowns most weekends for the past month or so (tears, lip pulling and all that jazz) over at times not the most significant things.

Like this morning the girls were jumping up and down the bed and haven’t sorted their toys. I think part of the problem is I am not their parent and therefore don’t feel like I can discipline them. Also, I feel that I would do certain things differently from Mr A when it comes to dealing with their behaviour. At times, I feel like a prisoner in my own house..kids and Mr A downstairs watching some kids programme and me upstairs in our bedroom on my laptop.

I don’t think it is an ideal situation for anyone and I know it’s still early days (we’ve only been living together since October) but if anyone has got any experience of handling kids that are not your own and not being reduced to tears I would really appreciate that. Maybe you can point me in the direction of some bloggers who touch on that topic?

Now onto food and exercise bit:

Yesterday was my rest day and my cheat meal as well. For some reason I have been dying to have some trifle but alas can’t as the sponge contains wheat. I managed to persuade (read whine over and over) Mr A to bake me a sponge, I fixed Hartley’s sugarfree jelly and used a tin of low fat custard plus squirty cream and voila–>

Fear not it was not the only thing I have eaten all day. As we are trying to empty our freezer (AND I was feeling lazy) I reheated one of turkey and lentil stews

Minimum cleanup is the best (yes I do have more plastic containers but this one is my favourite and the biggest one)

Today I was hoping to start my day with coconut flour waffles but they turned out absolutely crap so being starved by then I settled for 2nd best thing porridge with peaches, protein powder, chia seeds, cinammon and coconut oil

Once more my lunch was curtousy of the freezer (carrot and swede soup with chicken breast and spelt pasta)

I more than likely will consume some frozen yoghurt after my yoga session with Mr A (yay) while I’m watching Dancing on Ice finale. Now onto finishing reorganising my wardrobe (bye bye winter, hello spring/summer)

How was your weekend?

Almost Friday post

Hello,

Hope everyone is well. It’s been an absolutely gorgeous day today and I got to fully enjoy it (benefits of working in  a middle of a park lol). Look who I have spotted:

Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

We get a swan or two from time to time so I took a quick picture for posterity lol

And that’s the view on a way into my office. Not too shabby, eh?

Level 2 of 30 day shred is still killing me and I have to say I feel like a wim coz when I’m doing chair squat with v lifts I can only cope with using 1 kg dumbbells (in my defence I do have to do that move twice for a whole minute at a time). I’m slowly getting my mojo back and after my injury induced break I am a lot more aware of people doing exercises wrong. I am no longer impressed when someone’s doing overhead lunges with 10kg dumbbells in each hand if they have to overarch their backs and basically collapse their lower vertabreas together. I seen two young, clearly new to the gym guys tonight, following a Men’s Health encyclopedia of exercise doing just that. It looked absolutely awful, I wish I was braver and had the courage to help them but they looked very pleased with themselves so wasn’t sure how my comment would be recieved.

My eats haven’t been all that exciting today:

Omelette with goats cheese and rocket (3 egg whites+2 whole eggs) with sunflower toast
Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

Another container of popcorn with coconut oil (I think this will be in snack rotation for forseeable futire as it’s just that good and pretty low cal as well)

Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

and for lunch I had soup again (sorta run out of the space in the freezer and we did make a big batch so…)
Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

and for before the workout snack I had rice cakes sandwich with strawberry jam, peanut butter and mixed seeds

Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

Tea was the best:
2 Polish sausages, cauliflower mash, mixed vegetables and the best caramelised onions I have eaten in ages. I may or may not have licked the plate lol

I’m going out for a meal for my friend’s birthday tomorrow so that should be interesting as it’s wuite late 8.30 at a Thai place:
a) I really dont like Thai I find it too spicy
b) I don’t want to be eating starchy carbs too late on

so after looking up menu online I may just setlle for stirfried vegetables. Either way it will be nice to catch up with birthday girl.

Have you got any plans for the weekend?

Physio update & Shirataki noodles

Hello,

Guess who got cleared yesterday for any reasonable exercise?

ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am beyond overjoyed, my physiotherapist said I don’t need to see him anymore unless my back pain returns 🙂 I can start including more plyometrics as long as I stay sensible and not overdo it, which is fair enough.

I didn’t think I would get the all clear so soon so was very surprised yesterday. I celebrated the news by starting level 2 of 30 day shred. Oh boy, did it kick my ass or what? I am redescovering my exercise DVDs as they all feel ”new” to me given how much more difficult and challenging they feel now. Definitely getting my money’s worth from them ha:)

This year I am trying to grow some veg and we got onto planting the seeds last night. We are planning to move it into the garden when things start sprouting. I am hoping to have:

Parsley

Dill

Thyme

Cauliflower

Broccoli

Mixed Salad

Aubergine

Beetroot

Cherry tomatoes

Here’s how it’s looking now:
Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

Please note the ever so cute watering can in the shape of pink elephant (that was only 99p so a bargain in my book)

To break my habit of always eating omelettes and scrambled eggs I made another batch of Kristi’s egg muffins this time with Polish sausage and aspargus served with extra aspargus
Before:

After

I am seriously loving aspargus at the moment so picking up 2 bunches from tesco for 17p each was a godsend

I also finally got round to trying shirataki noodles:
Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

Mr A served them with homemade tomato and onion sauce over chicken pieces and it was surprisingly filling considering those noodles are basically water and fibre lol

I should be ok with not needing to prep lunches for a couple of days as we also did a big batch of turky, veg and lentils stew last night.

Happily bubbling away:

Have you tried any new ingredients lately?

Tuesday recap

Hiya

Hope your day today has been as good as mine 🙂 Work flew by, I managed to get some time off before the D day of 16th of May so I can panic in the comfort of my own bedroom lol, finished my monitoring report and had a successful session at the gym.

It may not sound like much but today I exercised for 55 minutes in total doing 30 day shred (still level 1), my normal physio exercises and I thrown in some abs moves at the end plus stretched well. I am trying to build up my time at the gym slowely as not to overwhelm myself and fingers crossed but so far my back is cooperating so yay 🙂

I really really planned to take pics of all my food that I take to work but I got distracted and thats the best I have got:
Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

In the blue containe we have got homemade vegetable soup with chicken breast and some noodles

In green and purple fairies (don’t judge) container we have got chopped up melon

Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

In yellow container theres cottage cheese with radish

in red container there are brown rice dippers

One of my energy bars

A carrot

and my water bottle

Everything got eaten and on a way back from the gym I nipped into Aldi when I picked these lovely flowers for only £1.50
Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

They definitely brighten the room and smell gorgeous

And here’s my tea after the workout.
Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

Compliments of my freezer we have got a portion of cauliflower mash, Polish sausage and two eggs plus 2 gherkins

It may not look like much but it totally hit the spot and was the quickest comfort food ever (3 mins for the eggs and 2 mins in the microwave to reheat mash and sausage).

Time to prep food for tomorrow now.

What’s your comfort food of choice?

Baking and shopping haul

Hello,

My back is happier with me as I went to a different yoga session last night and got my noodle effect that I was after..very relaxing and stretchy 60 mins of my life definitely worth £2 fee lol

More importantly I started doing 30 day shred (by Jillian Michaels) again and I have got to say I lost a lot of strenght and endurance squats with dumbbell presses (only 2kgs in each hand) really tired me out and doing 15 pushups in a row was pure torture but I survived day 1 and intend to stick with the shred. I have mostly chosen it coz:

a) I LOVE Jillian Michaels I have most of her dvds as she can not do wrong in my eyes (let’s forget when she was endorsinf those dodgy diet pills tho pretty please)

b) it fits perfectly with my physiotherapist’s recommendation of no more than 30mins of normal exercise per day

c) I enjoyed it last time round

d) I can do it both at home and at a gym which is a binus when I’m struggling tp fit a workout in.

I gotta share those pics of 2 amazing recipes from two fab bloggers I baked over the weekend:

First up we have got Gluten Free Raspberry Orange scones by Lori from What Runs Lori

Her pics are way better but here’s my take on the scones:

Being me I did switch a few things up as I had no oranges I used lemon zest and I swapped raspberries for strawberries fr exactly the same reason. I served them up in typical British fashion smothered in strawberry jam and clotted cream–> not healthy at all but sooooooooo worth it 🙂

Then I also made Kasey’s PowerPumpkin Roll (PowerCakes). The only thing I did swap was the pumpkin puree as I used babyfood (apple and pumpkin flavour) coz couldn;t find any pumpkin when needed lol

Here’s my take on the lush roll:

Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

Had a portion of it for my mid morning snack today and it certainly filled me up very nicely 🙂

I don’t think I ever shared my Holland and Barret amazing buy 1 get one half price haul from last weekend so gere it goes:

I’m off to London on Tuesday with Mister A to see my granddad who has flown in on unrelated business so I hope I sorted this scheduled post ok

What’s your best bargain ever?

Oops I overdid it again…

Hiya,

So I went to a yoga class on Thursday night..all excited, all ready expecting to feel instantly zen, flexible and to stretch out all my kinks

Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

On the pic I’m looking confident, ready to conquer my yoga mat and in the zone..BUT..

when I got to the gym  different instructor was taking a class and instead of doing the regular yoga for relaxation/flexibility she did yoga for strenght. And yes she warned us before hand so I could have left at that stage. Did I? Of course not I was determined to do a yoga class no matter what after 4 months of being told I can not risk it. Being a good competetive girl I placed my mind directly in front of the instructor’s–> clearly so I can see her better not that she can see what an amazing yogini I am *cue sarcasm*

I’m sure you can see where this is going- I did get through the 60 mins of yoga, but in hindsight I should have left probably if not before it started than maybe 15 mins in as my back was not happy camper. I found out there is no way in hell I can even do Cobra properly at this stage and was stuck with sphinx
Photobucketsource

(which I know is absolutely fine blah blah blah but being rather competetive I felt like a failure for taking the easier option). The only thing that I have done really well that caused me no pain was a tree pose:
Photobucketsource

So the next morning after yoga my muscles were not happy one bit so I had to make a decision to skip a workout out I did still my physio exercises to pacify my back and I *think* I learnt my lesson.

Onto a bit nicer topic of food here are some of my eats over the last two days:
Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

Friday night is fast becoming a pizza and a movie night. Once I find a topping that I like I will do it till death so once again we have goats cheese, cherry tomaotes, rocket with the guest performance from red onions (hate cutting them but scored a bag of them already precut that was reduced to 25p so seemed like too much of a bargain to pass haha). This time we tried Caitlin’s recipe for pizza dough and it was better than last weeks from Oh She Glows but it’s still missing something as it’s rather tricky to transfer onto a pizza stone (so it’s just a bit too runny without actually being runny IYSWIM?)

Next morning , just because I could I had this:

Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

so at this rate I will not want to see red onions in  about a month time lol

Team effort cooking (as in I said I wanted a stew with these ingredients and I switched the slow cooker on in the morning whereas Mr A chopped and prepped everything lol) Pork stew with lentils, carrots, swede and an apple for flavour. Had this for Sat lunch and I still got 3 more portions in the freezer:
Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

and I will leave you with the pic of the bestest breakfast (at least in my humble opinion)

Oats with peaches, chia seeds, protein powder and coconut oil:

Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

They were truly glorious and just as goats cheese and cherry tomatoes they are one of my staple flavour combos

Do you ever get fixated on any food combos?

First time back in the gym in over 2 months

Hello

So I have  done it  I unfrozen my membership at Pure gym yesterday  morning , packed my gym bag and carefully  chosen my outfit to face a new kind  of challenge. I`ve got to say I sorta  dreaded my return  to the fitness  fold , mostly  coz I lost a lot of my strength  and endurance (I know it’s  perfectly  normal and to be expected but it didn’t  stop me hating  it any less) in the process  of sorting my muscle imbalances / back problem. At the gym end  of a day not moving  much for over months two months  is going  to have  an impact on my fitness  levels.

I am still only allowed to do max 30mins of exercise apart from my 30 mins of physio exercises a day so I told myself to be good and stick to 30 min maximum. I ended up doing a quick warm up, followed by 15 mins of cardio on elleptical (levels 3 and 4 at incline 10) and a mix of TRX exercises (mountain climbers, reverse row, pushups), knee ups on Smith machine and some stability ball rollouts. Stretched for a couple of minutes and called it a day.

Here’s my feedback:
Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

I can sya I survived and felt better for it. No one stared at me, laughed at me for needing to take more frequent breaks so I’m hoping my fear of returning to gym is gone now. I’m booked in for  a yoga session tonight as well ( it is 60mins but I figured it’s slow yoga so not that much of an exercisey activity so should be ok with that, right?)

Been tinkering with my new phone and apps for photo editing so without any further ado here we go:

Breakfast (courtasy of Kristi’s recipe idea)
Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

Tiny cute egg muffins with ham and onion plus a salad

Followed by mid morning snack of banana muffin (courtasy of Deb’s recipe)

Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App

Followed by lunch:

with chicken pieces lovingly cooked by Mr A

Now probably gonna have a little something before yoga.

What’s yout favourite snack?
